Dr Ronan Kearney, Consultant Sports & Exercise Medicine Physician, recently had an abstract published in the Heart BMJ (the official journal of the British Cardiovascular Society) -a bi weekly peer reviewed medical journal covering all areas of cardiovascular medicine and surgery.

This quality improvement project was carried out with two major goals in mind. The first to provide patients attending the CRY Clinic with guidance on exercise. Often those attending the clinic are unsure should they be exercising or what exercise would be best for them. We know that exercise is in itself a medicine and for most is paramount to overall health. Some people with certain cardiac conditions require a more specific exercise prescription and this is where the developed CRY ‘Exercise Prescription’ (Ex Rx) has come in helpful. It has encouraged and given such people the confidence to exercise safely. Alongside this the group developed patient information resources for exercise in specific cardiac conditions. The second goal was to incorporate a physical activity evaluation and discussion into each consultation and to improve exercise medicine clinician education. Dr Ronan Kearney gave exercise educational lectures to the clinician staff at CRY and developed clinician exercise medicine educational resources that can be used as an aid during such consultations.

Discussion around physical activity and exercise has become the norm at the CRY clinic and Exercise Prescriptions and Exercise Resources are available to the clinicians to use when required. The study could not have happened without the full support of the top class CRY Cardiology Team and in particular thanks to Dr Deirdre Ward, Dr Vivienne Sullivan and Ms Helen Connaughton for supporting this project which was lead by Dr Ronan Kearney.

Dr Vivienne Sullivan presented the findings of the project via poster form at the Irish Cardiac Society Annual Meeting in Cork on 7-9th Oct 2022 and the findings of the project is published in Heart BMJ and can be found here: https://heart.bmj.com/content/108/Suppl_3/A42
