Bandon chartered accountant Phil Murphy ran Cork City Marathon that took place on Monday 2nd June. Phil completed the full marathon this year for the first time with his friend Robert Merrick to fundraise for C.R.Y, in memory of his niece Orlaith Murphy. Phil finished the marathon in 3hours and 48mins and Robert in just under 4 hours.
Phil and Robert took part in last year’s Cork City Marathon as part of a relay team and subsequently decided to keep up the training, and to run the entire race this year in aid of C.R.Y.- Cardiac Risk in the Young.
Phil decided to run for C.R.Y. because of the tragic loss of his niece Orlaith Murphy who died suddenly in 2005, aged 15. The death was a shock to the greater Murphy family, especially Phil’s three daughters who were very close to their cousin.
Phil first heard of C.R.Y. through a local GP, Dr. Fionnuala Quigley, who is a trustee of C.R.Y. In recent years, Bandon Rotary club, of which Phil is a past-president, has donated part of the proceeds of it’s annual golf am-am to CRY.
