Presentation Brothers College, Mardyke, Cork won the Munster under 16 ½ Hurling Cup to bridge a 90 year gap to the last schools GAA championship success in 1928. The cup is called Corn Darra uí Dhonabháin after Darra who was an active sports man in Desmond College, Newcastle West, Limerick, and who very sadly passed away at a young age while still in school. Mrs O’Donovan presented the cup to our captain on Ballyagran GAA pitch after the final and spoke movingly about her son and his sporting interests.
There is an annual fundraiser in Darra’s memory over the May bank holiday weekend in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young (www.cry.ie) and PBC decided to contribute to this worthy cause as holder of this hurling cup. PBC teacher, Paul Downes, attended the same school as Darra and he accepted our PBC contribution on behalf of the local organisers.
