The Streets of Galway 8k takes place on Saturday 11 August and the Treacy and Power families from the Crescent and Raven Terrace are using the race to raise funds and awareness for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).
A team from Galway Fire Service will take part in the race along with nearly 200 family and friends of Tom, Regina, Colm and Paul Power.
Over 5,000 people suffer sudden cardiac death in Ireland each year, of which 60 to 80 are under the age of 35. Cardiac disease in young people is mostly due to inherited heart disease or birth defects.
An estimated 10,000 people in Ireland carry genes for inherited heart disease, more often than not unknowingly. The Centre for Cardiovascular Risk in Younger Persons in Tallaght, Dublin provides evaluation and treatment for at risk individuals and families and depends primarily on financial donations as it receives no Government funding.
To get involved and receive a sponsorship card and t-shirt for the Galway 8k, contact Tom on 087 6501771 or Regina Power on 087 0520054. For more information, see www.cry.ie.
