Tag Rugby
It wasn’t quite as bad as the previous week when the torrential rain stopped play before it began, but conditions last Friday evening were still about as poor as you can get for tag rugby.
The change of day to accommodate Ireland vs Spain unfortunately coincided with the worst weather of the week but this didn’t deter anyone from participating in a full programme of games.
Those who played in the first round of matches at least had one half without rain but from about 7.00pm the rain was unrelenting.
This wasn’t much fun for players and was particularly miserable for spectators though the sensible ones, spectators that is, could at least view the action from the comfort of the bar.
The wonderfully-named Buskers Managed Badgers, wonderful if you’re not a badger, lead the Higher Grade on points difference from the Wafflers. The clash of these two next Thursday evening should be interesting.
The teams in divisions One and Two as well as the Beginners’ leagues started their campaigns in earnest last week, following the first three weeks of seeding matches. It’s still too early to say how these are developing. A second week of competition this coming Thursday should reveal a lot.
The fancy dress night at tag rugby is by now legendary because of the effort that teams put into it and the party atmosphere it generates. However there is a serious side to the night because it raises much needed funds for selected charities.
This year’s nominated charity is CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young – which was established in 2002 to raise awareness of cardiac risk, support a national screening centre and provide counselling and support.
This year’s fancy dres night is scheduled for Thursday 28th June and teams are already planning how to impress the guest judges and win the coveted grand prize. At least one team view this as its only chance of a trophy this, and every season.
