Why RTE’s Jacqui Hurley plans to run a marathon on her wedding weekend
From walking up the aisle to running a mile, RTE broadcaster Jacqui Hurley is set for a marathon weekend next month in memory of her brother, who died in a tragic accident last year. Sean Hurley, who was a champion motorcycle racer, was killed in a single–vehicle accident outside Halfway on the Kinsale to Bandon Road last November, when his 4 x 4 vehicle spun out of control and struck a tree. Friends and family of the Ballinhassig 25 year-old are now to join his sister in running the Cork City Marathon relay on Monday, June 4th, a sporting occasion on Mr. Hurley’s “bucket list”, which he wrote just two days before his accident.
As part of an initiative to complete all the goals on Sean’s list, which includes a triathlon, running a pub and owning a racetrack, 52 people have signed up for the marathon relay team in his honour, with two teams of 26 running a mile each.
The marathon will also take place just two days after Ms. Hurley’s Cork wedding. “Since Sean died we’ve been trying to complete all of the things on his list for him. We began with his working with concrete ambition and have since completed a Duathlon and the MonsterMac Triathlon in April”, she said. “Next up is to run the Cork City Marathon. As I am getting married in Cork over the June Bank Holiday Weekend, I was hoping that all our family and friends could run the marathon in Sean’s memory so that he wouldn’t be forgotten at the wedding”.
All funds raised will be donated to the Centre for Cardiac Risk in Younger Persons (CRYP) at Tallaght Hospital and for more information see www.cry.ie.
