All participants are invited to bring a picnic and there will be a raffle at the end of the day.
Most of us are familiar with the facilities and treatment offered in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, it is always difficult to see one’s child sick, but the expertise, combined with compassion and excellent care offered in Crumlin, all work to ease the burden on families when they are at their most vulnerable.
In recent years the sudden deaths of some sporting individuals, particularly GAA player Cormac McAnallen and rugby player John McCall, has brought media attention to sudden cardiac death in the young.
The realisation that some of the fittest, apparently healthiest people could die of cardiac problems that they were unaware of led to a high level of concern among young people, their parents, coaches and teachers.
In 2002 a group of people came together in response to the tragic and untimely deaths of family members and the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) was established with a view to offering support to families affected by sudden young adult death. In 2007 a dedicated unit, based in The Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Tallaght opened its doors.
This new centre for Cardiac Risk in the Younger Person) provides rapid access to expert evaluation to families who have experienced the loss of a young person to sudden cardiac death. This facility receives no direct Government funding and relies on funding from CRY and some support from Tallaght Hospital, to continue family screening and counselling.
