Marie Greene: A Legacy of Compassion and Advocacy
After 23 years of unwavering service, Marie Greene, Co-Founder of CRY Ireland (Cardiac Risk in the Young), has stepped down as a Trustee, leaving behind a legacy defined by empathy, resilience, and transformative impact.
A Journey Born from Heartbreak
Marieโs journey began in June 1996, when she and her late husband Michael faced the unimaginable loss of their youngest son, Peter, who died suddenly at just 15 years old. This tragedy ignited a mission to understand sudden cardiac death (SCD)ย and ensure that no family would endure such loss without support.
Founding CRY Ireland
In 2002, Marie and Michael co-founded CRY Ireland, creating a lifeline for families affected by SCD. With her background in social work and counselling, Marie became the heart of the organization, establishing the CRY Freephone Helplineย from her own home. This service offered comfort and guidance to grieving familiesโa resource she and Michael had desperately needed themselves.
A Beacon of Support
Marieโs phone was never off. She reached out personally to families across Ireland, offering solace during their darkest hours. Her dedication inspired countless volunteers, many of whom joined CRY to give back in the same generous way Marie had once supported them.
Champion of Fundraising and Awareness
Marieโs commitment extended beyond emotional support. She spearheaded fundraising initiatives that strengthened CRYโs mission:
- Camino Francรฉs Walk (2017):ย Leading a group to Santiago, combining her love of walking with advocacy.
- Mini Marathons & Pure Style:ย Driving participation in events like the Cork Mini Marathon, VHI Womenโs Mini Marathon, and the innovative Pure Style fundraiser.
Through these efforts, Marie not only raised vital funds but also built a vibrant community united by hope and prevention.
A Lasting Role
Though stepping down as Trustee, Marie will continue to serve as President of CRY Ireland, ensuring her voice and vision remain integral to the charityโs future.
A Legacy That Lives On
Marie Greeneโs story is one of turning personal tragedy into a movement that has saved lives and comforted countless families. Her compassion and leadership have left an indelible mark on CRY Ireland and the wider community.
We thank Marie for her extraordinary service and wish her a fulfilling retirement from her Trustee role.
