Shauna McCann was remembered fondly by her school, St Paul’s Bessbrook, in a recent fundraising event in aid of CRY Ireland. The vibrant 19-year-old young trainee teacher died from sudden cardiac event while studying as a Special Needs Teacher in Liverpool in 2008.
Last week St Paul’s school donated a cheque for £1,000 to CRY, in her honour. Her father, Kevin, an active local sportsman and community activist, along with staff and pupils had organised a very successful No Uniform Day, deemed by all to have been very successful…and great fun.
Shauna was also a keen sportsperson, as an accomplished footballer and golfer. She was very dedicated to her family, and while home at Christmas, 2007, she collapsed, but recovered sufficiently to return after Christmas to Liverpool to continue her studies. On January 29th, the McCann’s took the call that all parents fear; their beloved daughter had suffered a sudden cardiac event, and didn’t recover.
Such is the community spirit in the Bessbrook/Camlough area, that, 18 years later, she is still fondly remembered and celebrated. St Paul’s principal, Mr Jarlath Burns, congratulated Kevin and the pupils and staff for their great achievement, and thanked Tommy Fegan, representing CRY Ireland for all the wonderful work and support the charity offers bereaved families.
