Deirdre set to take part in Dublin Marathon for Charity
A Consultant Cardiologist, with strong Dundalk roots, is dusting off her running shoes to take part in the Dublin marathon to raise funds for the Centre for Cardiac Risk in Younger People.
Dr. Deirdre Ward, Consultant Cardiologist and Co-Director of the Centre for Cardiac Risk, has decided to boost fundraising efforts for the Centre by running the 201 Dublin City Marathon on Monday, 31st October.
Dr. Ward has acted as Consultant Cardiologist and Co-Director at the CRYP in Tallaght Hospital since the centre opened in 207.
The centre provides free cardiac testing for anyone who has lost a family member to sudden cardiac death or anyone who has worrying symptoms.
It receives no government funding, and is heavily reliant on fundraising.
“I have worked at the CRYP Centre for almost five years now and we are still in need of funding to keep the free programme running. Many of our patients and families work very hard to raise funds for us – I decided it was time to do my bit to raise money and awareness for the charity.’
‘I also invite anyone else interested in supporting CRY to join me in the challenge of running this year’s Dublin Marathon.’
Dr. Ward’s family are from Dundalk, including her father, and grandfather Peter Ward, who ran the general stores on Park Street until the 1970s.
Currently training for the marathon, she added: “The training has been challenging in the Irish summer weather. I will e very happy to complete the course, and am trying not to focus on a specific time. I can be motivated by offers of bonus donations if I get under 4 hours 30 however!’
Dr. Ward can be sponsored on the CRY website, www.cry.ie. Click on the Donate Now button and find Dr. Ward on the drop down menu.
All proceeds go directly to CRY. Anyone interested in running the Dublin Marathon for CRY can contact Lucia Ebbs on (01) 4525482.
