It\u2019s only eight months since he collapsed in front of millions on the football pitch \u2013 but these pictures show how Fabrice Muamba is raring to get back \u2026 on the dance floor at least.<\/p>\n

The 24 year old footballer has made an astonishing recovery from the cardiac arrest he suffered during a televised match and is now preparing to star in Strictly Come Dancing\u2019s Christmas special, the Mail can reveal.<\/p>\n

The Bolton Wanderers star\u2019s partner will be professional dancer Aliona Vilani, 28.<\/p>\n

Muamba retired from football in the summer on the advice of doctors after his collapse during an FA Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur. During the cardiac arrest his heart stopped for 76 minutes.<\/p>\n

He was fitted with a pacemaker and admitted his Strictly practice sessions were taking their toll. \u2018This is definitely the hardest thing I have done since my recovery,\u2019 he said.  But he confirmed that doctors had given him the all-clear to compete, adding: \u2018I\u2019m feeling good now.  I\u2019ve already been training with Aliona for a week and there are no complaints.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018But I have a new respect for dancers. I have always been a massive fan of Strictly so it is a pleasure to take part.\u2019<\/p>\n

The former midfielder previously admitted that he was keen to take part in the show and that he was asked to go on another dance spectacle, but turned it down.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018I was approached to do Dancing On Ice, but I had to say no. That\u2019s more dangerous than football.  My insurance definitely doesn\u2019t cover that. But I\u2019d do Strictly Come Dancing. I love my salsa so I\u2019d be well up for that.\u2019<\/p>\n

The number of deaths in Ireland caused by sudden cardiac arrest would be greatly reduced if GPs were equipped with and trained in the use of defibrillators, a new study has found.<\/p>\n

Between 3,000 and 5,000 people die annually from sudden cardiac events that might not be fatal if treated in time.<\/p>\n

The Health Research Board (HRB) study found that the provision of a defibrillator and appropriate training for every GP in the State would allow rapid intervention, which could save hundreds of lives every year.<\/p>\n

Electric shocks <\/p>\n

Defibrillators are devices that can trigger the heart back into a normal rhythm by applying electric shocks when its beating becomes dangerously rapid or irregular.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know how to fix ventricular fibrillation, but fixing it is completely and utterly time-dependent,\u201d said Gerard Bury, professor of general practice at University College Dublin, who led the study.<\/p>\n

The research was based on a five-year project funded by the HSE, the Pre-Hospital Emergency Council and the Department of Health, which saw 500 health professionals provided with defibrillators and appropriate training to deal with sudden cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation.<\/p>\n

The HRB study found that, at a cost of \u20ac4,000 per GP, a defibrillator and appropriate training could be provided, leading to a significant increase in survival rates.<\/p>\n

Prof Bury said the use of defibrillators by GPs nationally would increase survival rates \u201cthree or fourfold\u201d.  Survival rates for sudden cardiac arrests that occur outside of hospital in Ireland are currently just one in 20.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis sort of structured intervention and support, allied with the strength of general practice can make a huge difference at local level, \u201c Prof Bury said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery GP in the country needs a defibrillator.\u201d<\/p>\n

The research findings are set out in the HRB\u2019s Picture of Health 2012<\/em>, which is published today.<\/p>\n

\u2018Hot spots\u2019<\/p>\n

The publication also highlights research carried out by a HRB-funded research team at Trinity College Dublin, which identifies so-called road traffic hot spots on the country\u2019s national primary and secondary roads where crashes are likely.<\/p>\n

Dr Erica Donnelly-Swift and Prof Alan Kelly analysed information from some 8,000 collisions on major roads between 2005 and 2009.<\/p>\n

Dr Donnelly-Swift said the research should inform policies and measures aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries on the country\u2019s major roads. <\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately we hope this research will save lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
