The O’Herlihy and O’Donovan families gathered together along with 1600 other people to take part in the Monagea 10k run/walk/cycle on Saturday 4th May 2013.This amazing event was held in memory of Niamh Herlihy and Darra O’Donovan who both died suddenly at the young ages of 21 and 16 respectively in 2011. All proceeds raised went to CRY.
The day saw over 350 cyclists take part in 80km and 40km circuits that started and finished at the Monagea community centre, while an estimated 1,300 people took part in the in a 10km run/walk event. Throughout the day a small army of volunteers, friends and relatives helped ensure that the event went off as smoothly as possible. Refreshment stalls handed out hundreds of drinks, while 135 sliced pan loves were buttered to make sandwiches.
Balloons were also released in memory of Niamh and Darra whose deaths united the communities of Monagea, Newcastle West and Strand in an outpouring of grief. A great day was had by all. This has resulted in one of the biggest fundraisers ever held in aid of CRY.
